As the name suggests, three stone rings primarily have three feature diamonds or gemstones. Often only three gemstones will be used, although you can still have additional diamond content in other areas of the ring.
Many wonderful examples of three stone engagement rings are shown below. Although all differ, there is a single thread linking them. In all of them, the central stone, whether it be a Diamond, Sapphire or Ruby, is the largest gemstone.
The reason for this, is that the ring needs to fit on a finger. In order to do this, the band has to slope away from its central point and setting. This makes it necessary to drop the side stones a little not only in relative height, but also in size. If the three stones were of equal physical size, the outer ends of the setting would protrude. They would also be very high as the ring band and shoulder drops away.
Where you have a ring with three gemstones that are the same size, the eye sees more of the perimeter of the outer two. This gives the viewer the impression that the central stone is smaller, even if it is not. So most three stone rings are made to have a tiered effect. This makes the highest central point also the largest of the three gemstones.
What Should the Proportions of a Three Stone Ring Be?
The proportion of the three gemstones in the engagement ring can vary depending on just how prominent the designer and client want the feature stone to be.
In order to keep the focus on the centre piece, additional diamonds should be subtle and not overpower the central gemstone.
